Even NFL has started direct streaming from NFL.com. F1 just renewed their contract with ESPN for $75m a year from the previous $5m a year. Ultimately when interests rise, viewership on traditional TV will rise as well. They can renegotiate their contracts with existing TV/Cable networks to make them all non-exclusive/complimentary to streaming. if more people watch ATP matches, they get a larger % of the revenue. ![]() The revenue could be split based on number of views, i.e. A free version could be offered with limited matches, ad supported, no commentating, and a full version can be offered like what we have with British Amazon Prime - no ads, British commentators, all matches available simultaneously. All these entities need to get together and jointly invest in a website where people could stream all matches directly regardless of who owns what. Fans don't care which governing body has what rights, they just want to watch tennis. ![]() You have ATP, WTA, ITF, plus each slam has its own governing body which negotiates its own TV rights etc. The problem with tennis is, there are simply too many governing bodies. The British commentators are also far better than the US commentators. It's so much better when you can choose whichever match you want to watch, or watch multiple on your screen, and can start/stop the match or watch a replay at any point, all ad free. The problem with TV is you can only watch one match at a time, and are a captive audience for their endless ads. Tennis needs to get away from traditional TV to survive. Previously in the US it was only available on ESPN.Ģ) Started the "Drive to Survive" series on Netflixģ) Added a lot more races in new locations ![]() Liberty Media did 3 main things to turn it around:ġ) Started direct streaming from F1.com, I think it's something like $90 a year, with British commentators. I hope WTA doesn't return to that venue next year.į1 became much bigger when Bernie Ecclestone sold it to Liberty Media in 2017. Worth arena which made the empty seats stood out even more. The organizers were also smart to completely dim the lights, and the seats aren't stupid light color like in the Ft. But the Novax-Sissypass match today is >90% full and the atmosphere is electric. The Nadal-Fritz match was better attended but by no means full. Incidentally I watched a bit of the ATP Finals yesterday and there were plenty of empty seats for the Ruud-FAA match. But most importantly they really need to make it much easier for viewers to watch all their matches by having a central streaming site, make it free with ads and no commentary or a monthly fee without ads and with (British) commentary. The WTA could also do a much better job promoting their stars, starting with a complete revamp of their website to better market their tournaments and players. If Iga and Emma could get a consistent rivalry going it'd be epic for WTA, considering their lone matchup in a non-slam QF has more views than all the QF and SF match highlights in all 4 slams this year, and has nearly as many views as the Wimbledon F (722K to 747K). WTA needs at least a couple of consistent rivalries at the top. In truth it's impossible for one person to carry an entire tour. ![]() Click to expand.Thank you for not taking offense at my tease.
